All
students in the Bachelor of Tourism and Hospitality Management degree program are being asked to complete the survey at the
link below. The survey is for research into the areas of management competencies
and how students attain these competencies. There are no right or wrong answers
in this survey and it is not a test. The results will be used to analyze how
management competencies are acquired and to monitor the progression of these skills.
The
surveys will be administered to all BTHM students, and categorized according to your co-op segment. Students will complete this survey after each co-op experience or practicum experience to better monitor
their progression in attaining management competencies over the co-op or practicum segments.
The survey results will be presented to the groups as a whole in the co-op PD sessions and individual student results
will not be revealed. However, if you wish to discuss your results in confidence,
you may request time with one of the researchers.
The
data will be analyzed in groups, so your results are confidential and will only be released to you by your faculty advisor.
This
survey is part of a common management tool used in management courses and management
training programs. Its source is the textbook, Becoming a Master Manager: A Competency
Framework, 3rd. edition by Quinn, Faerman, Thompson, and McGrath.
The key points behind the survey are:
- People are not born managers; the competencies are learned skills.
- Identifying competency weaknesses is important to the process of self-development.
- One can self-improve even in areas of strength.
As
you answer the survey, remember that there are no right or wrong answers. If
you have no or little experience in some of the situations, think about group experiences where you might have used these
skills or how you may respond.
If
at any time during the survey you are uncomfortable in answering a question, you are free to leave it blank.
